Strauss & co - Review 2024

32 33 CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT 2024 CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT 2024 In September, the sale Mid-Century Mod- ern Furniture & Design featured furniture, glassware, ceramics and jewellery made between 1906 and the present day by influential designers and master fabrica- tors. This online sale saw robust bidding for works by Danish furniture designer Gunni Omann and Italian-Brazilian archi- tect Giuseppe Scapinelli. It confirmed a shift in collecting tastes to twentieth and twenty-first century pieces. Excellent historical examples of furniture and silverware will always command a market. This was evidenced in the keen prices paid for English and South African furniture pieces in June, where a late 18th century Cape stinkwood and beefwood armoire fetched R140 700. The sale Cel- ebrating Silver: Timeless Luxury in October saw 96% of the 72 lots offered sell. The top earner was a set of 12 Mexican silver underplates by celebrated mid-century Mexican silversmith Juventino Lopez Reyes, sold for R87 938 / $4 885.
