Strauss & co - Review 2022

Supported by illustrated catalogues, Giving Direction and Dream Invisible Connections provided important context for the appreciation of South African art within a longer chronology. These non-selling exhibitions also offered an important opportunity for client contact and hospitality, as well as sales drives. The subject and theme of Giving Direction provided a theme for a curated session in April’s marquee live auction. The figuration session gathered a diverse selection of pieces by prominent and lesser-known artists, building on themes introduced in Giving Direction . In August, Strauss & Co’s Johannesburg gallery hosted an exhibition juxtaposing works by modernist painter Dorothy Kay and contemporary artist Mary Sibande. Organised by art department specialists Arisha Maharaj and Wilhelm van Rensburg, Dream Invisible Connections featured a large range of works, many on loan from private and institutional collections. Dream Invisible Connections was the fourth in a series of legacy exhibitions pairing prominent South African artists. Past editions featured Louis Maqhubela and Douglas Portway (2019), Maggie Laubser and Gladys Mgudlandlu (2020), and Robert Hodgins and George Pemba (2021). 58
