Strauss & co - Review 2022

d’Yquem Sauternes 1899 Sold R136 560 ($8 055) The Tabernacle Sale: Selection of Rare Wines In July, Distell’s historical Tabernacle cellar was also proudly auctioned by Strauss & Co. Initiated by Africa’s leading producer of wines and spirits, this “research and development” wine cellar was a treasure trove of South Africa’s greatest wines from the last century. The very oldest wines were tasted and then recorked by Amorim, preserving legendary and rare wines such as GS 1966, Zonnebloem Cabernet 1963 and Rustenberg Dry Red 1974. A pre-Rubicon Meerlust Red 1978 reached R15 242 ($896), while several bottles of Chateau Libertas 1940 sold at R23 450 ($1 379) each. Strauss & Co was honoured to host the record Cape Winemakers Guild 2022 auction. This 40-year-old winemaking collective offers unique, small parcels from South Africa’s top winemakers. The white-glove auction was enthusiastically supported. It generated a record number of bids, live and virtually. Kanonkop CWG Paul Sauer 2019 was the most prolific wine while two white wines – Lismore Estate Vineyards Valkyrie Chardonnay 2021 and Mullineux Trifecta Chenin Blanc 2020 – were amongst the top four lots sold. The wine department’s catalogue grew extensively in 2022. The debut auction for New World Wines in September was another white-glove affair. Many of the leading wine producers from Australia and the USA were available. Highlights included a single bottle of Penfolds Coonawarra Cabernet Kalimna Shiraz 1962, which sold for R125 180 ($7 364), and Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, which achieved R66 004 ($3 883). 50
