Strauss & co - Review 2022

Strauss & Co’s wine department concluded a highly successful 2022 with an astounding eight white-glove sales. This achievement reflected the overall quality of the historical and ultra-rare wines on offer. The Coats Family Cellar auction in November presented a deep collection of the world’s most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. It included some of the finest and rarest Bordeaux wines produced. Highlights from this sale were an immaculate bottle of Chateau d’Yquem 1899, which sold for R136 560 ($8 055), a Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982 magnum, which achieved R100 800 ($5 946), and a double-magnum of Chateau Margaux 2000, which fetched R96 730 ($5 706). In April, Strauss & Co sold South Africa’s first wine NFTs. This landmark auction featured five vertical collections of icon wines from Kanonkop, Klein Constantia, Meerlust, Mullineux and Vilafonté. Sourced from their historical wine libraries, the once-off, multi-decade collections were attached to digital certificates that can be traded into the future. The Strauss & Co Vin de Constance 86 – 27 NFT comprises the first 40 vintages of South Africa’s most famous wine and sold for R1.25 million ($73 529). Vin de Constance sold well throughout the year, with a new record (for any vintage) established when the first commercial vintage from 1987 sold for R58 625 ($3 449).
