Walter Battiss Two Nudes Sold R52 763 ($3 112) Online, 30 May - 13 June, Watercolour: The Choreography of Chance and Control Jacob Hendrik Pierneef Landscape with Farmstead Sold R87 938 ($5 187) 12 July, JH Pierneef: En Route • Also in June, a watercolour-themed sale of 60 lots presented in a general online-only auction saw excellent prices achieved by Walter Battiss and J. H. Pierneef. Two Nudes (n.d.) by Battiss sold for R52 763 ($3 112) and Pierneef’s Landscape with Farmstead (n.d.) fetched R87 938 ($5 187). • In July, JH Pierneef: En Route presented a 71-lot selection of works recording this highly collectable artist’s travel destinations. The top-selling work was a late-career painting from 1954 depicting a building in Mbweni, a town on the main island of Zanzibar, which went to a telephone bidder for R3 186 400 ($186 300). • Also in July, William Kentridge: In Print gathered 28 lots of mostly works on paper. The online-only sale coincided with the opening of a Kentridge survey exhibition at theWarehouse Art Museum in Milwaukee, USA. The top-selling lot was an edition of a hand-bound and woven paper etching titled Garibaldi (2016), sold for R820 750 ($48 000). • In August, a 61-lot focus on the Eastern Cape included works by Walter Battiss, Brian Bradshaw, Walter Meyer and George Pemba. Sculptor Anton Momberg’s polyester resin nude titled Bella (n.d.) sold for R128 975 ($7 587). 34
