Irma Stern: Time | Line , the first single-artist auction entirely devoted to this illustrious artist, underscored the value of a curated auction. Presented in the centenary year of Stern’s controversial South African debut, this landmark auction featured 140 works encompassing the artist’s major themes and interests. The auction drew a full house of buyers and over 750 online bidders. Over the course of the six-and-a-half-hours sale, jubilant applause greeted the sale of a number of lots. The white-glove auction turned over R37 million ($218 000). The top-selling lot was a 1941 portrait of a Cape Muslim clairvoyant in a pink headscarf from Stern’s golden period, which sold for R7.5 million ($439 137).
