The sale included 18 vintages of Klein Constantia’s renowned Vin de Constance, all of which found buyers. A single 500ml bottle of the highly regarded 1987 vintage achieved R28 450. Also in July, a 117-lot standalone sale focused on wines produced from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, especially in the hallowed Burgundy region, drew strong bids. The sale earned R1.3 million from 91 lots sold. The top lot was a single bottle of Romanée Conti 1998, a worldly famous and sought after Burgundy, sold for R216 220. Consistency is a marker of success. In August, the 103-lot online wine session netted R727 185 from 100 lots sold. Standout lots sold included half-dozen cases of De Trafford’s 2009 CWG Syrah, sold for R15 243, and Hartenberg’s 2005 The Stork, sold for R11 725. The sale included four lots of Porseleinberg’s celebrated Syrah. The 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages of winemaker Callie Louw’s Swartland wine achieved R25 795 each, and the 2015 vintage sold for R19 933 (6 x 750ml). In an innovative collaboration with the art department, the single-session sale Impression/Expression openedwith a curated five-lot selection of rare wines noteworthy for their incredible history, provenance and collectability. The combined age of the five individual bottles totalled 574 years and included two esteemed red wines: the coveted 1957 vintage of Chateau Libertas, South Africa’s oldest red wine, and iconic GS (George Spies) Cabernet Sauvignon 1966. The two red wines sold for R91 040 each. The night however belonged to a trio of sweet wines. The first commercial vintage of the Klein Constantia Vin de Constance from 1987 achieved R34 140. A 275ml bottle of the Jaubert Family Muscat d’Alexandrie, drawn from a 115-litre barrel in the care of the Joubert family for more than 200 years, sold for R91 040. The marquee lot was the 1821 Grand Constance, which sold for sold for R967 300. The five rare wines collectively earned R1.3 million.
