Hall’s collection claimed a special provenance. A youthful visitor to Cullinan Refractories, the company that manufactured Linn Ware, Hall was familiar with the personalities who shaped this storied design company. A lime green- glazed vase with russet highlights bearing the signature of Ceramic Studio, the precursor of Linn Ware, was the subject of fierce bidding and sold R34 140. Hall’s collection was presented in a sale with art and design amassed by well-known Afrikaans poet and art dealer Professor Leon Strydom. In October, two remarkable single-owner collections of objects rarely seen at auction in South Africa were presented together in a standalone online sale. The Andrew Newall Collection of Weapons included a fascinating array of swords, daggers and knives. A fine and rare Danish sword, circa 1800, sold for R32 830. The Vyvyan Myerson Collection of Cut-Steel and Cutlery included a delightful miscellany of scissors and penknives. A pair of Prussian sword hilt candlesticks sold for R70 350. 54
