Twenty years older than Kentridge, Esther Mahlangu has emerged as a quiet force at auction. The strong demand for her paintings noted in 2020 continued in 2021. Older works by Mahlangu are especially scarce. Souvenir de Paris , a 2003 mixed media work depicting Parisian landmarks sold above estimate for R147 940 in October. Younger painters who delivered solid results included Zander Blom, Georgina Gratrix, Mustafa Maluka and Simphiwe Ndzube. They all sold works for over R200 000, a key threshold. Marlene Steyn made a confident auction debut when her 2017 composition The Leaf Blows Hers sold above estimate for R136 560.
