Vladimir Tretchikoff Ballerina Sold R2 389 800 Vladimir Tretchikoff continued to thumb his nose at critics. In November, auctioneer Susie Goodman knocked down Tretchikoff’s undated painting Ballerina for R2.4 million. The lot formed part of an in-session focus on Tretchikoff, whose work is loved and disparaged with equal passion. A quartet of flower studies that featured in this session did remarkably well. The Tropical Flower , a 1945 composition made in Java and dedicated to the artist’s muse, Leonora “Lenka” Moltema, sold for R1.7 million. Painted three years later, Red Lilies (Amaryllis) achieved the same price. 34
