Strauss & Co’s art offering falls into three distinct periods: modern, post-war and contemporary. Maggie Laubser and Pieter Wenning, modernist peers of Pierneef and Stern, posted solid results. Laubser’s 1924 composition Shepherd and Sheep Who’s Who in Post-war and Contemporary Art sold for R1.6 million in April. Works by Wenning, an important impressionist, are prized by collectors; appropriately, his Cape landscape, Rietdakhuis, Mowbray, Cape , dated 1917, sold for R455 200 in September.
