Paintings yield the bulk of Strauss & Co’s turnover, but 2020 saw sculpture hold its own. Contemporary sculptor Dylan Lewis’s undated bronze Cheetah Running III sold for a new South African record of R2 million in July. The November sale included a number of Lewis’s prized felines, including Awakening Leopard from 1996, which sold for R1.6 million. Jane Alexander’s something’s going down 1993-94 , a tableau composed of painted clay figures set on a plinth, sold for R800 000 and was the top-selling lot at the February contemporary art sale.
