Strauss & Co achieved new world records for painters Keith Alexander and Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi at its July sale. But it was strong performances by contemporary artists – among them Nelson Makamo and Simphiwe Ndzube – that heralded the decisive emergence of new artists and collectors in the secondary market. In July, Makamo’s 2014 Portrait of a Girl Wearing Earrings sold well above estimate for R455 200. Works by Makamo also topped the September and October online sales.
