Jacob Hendrik Pierneef Kaap Bloubergstrand Sold R2 617 400 The pandemic year affirmed the durability of South Africa’s earlier twentieth-century moderns, notably Stern, JH Pierneef, Alexis Preller and Gerard Sekoto. Like Stern, Pierneef has been writing auction headlines for generations. In July a late bushveld scene from 1953 sold for R10.2 million. Interest in Pierneef was noticeable throughout the year. Several Pierneef lots occasioned vigorous bidding in November. A 1934 marine landscape of Bloubergstrand near Cape Town earned R2.6 million. 15
