Strauss & co - Review 2019
The decorative arts offerings span a range of collecting periods and areas. Interest in mid-twentieth century modern design, a category promoted by Strauss & Co specialist Sophie-Louise Fröhlich, is gaining pace. The March sale included a Gerrit Rietveld red and blue Model 763 armchair and Charles and Ray Eames white leather and rosewood-veneered Model 670 chair, both previously owned by artist Cynthia Villet-Gardner. A pair of Macassar ebony and rosewood console tables by David Linley fetched R85 350 in October. Also sold above estimate were six Dutch rosewood and teak ‘EJ’ side chairs designed in 1962 by Cor Bontenbal for Fristho Franeker, which fetched R45 520.
