Strauss & co - 2019 Mid-year Review

Strauss & Co has a busy programme of sales planned for the second-half of 2019, with two sales in Cape Town (7 October) and Johannesburg (11 November) complemented by a variety of boutique sales, including the Cape Town leg of the Fine Wine Auction (14 September). The Johannesburg sale will focus on South African artists who lived and worked in Paris. In addition to these recurring sales, Strauss & Co have been appointed to auction the contents of Harcroft Estate in Constantia. This Arts & Crafts style home houses a fine collection of oriental works of art, furniture and the accoutrements of fine living synonymous with the last fifty years of the 20th century. This exclusive sale will be held on 18 and 19 November 2019. Strauss & Co will once again be participating in Art Month at Welgemeend (1-31 August) and the Hilton Arts Festival (13-15 September). Both these events will include valuation days led by Strauss & Co experts. Looking ahead to the second-half of 2019 Initiated by collectors Lizelle and Frank Kilbourn, in association with the Friends of Welgemeend, Strauss & Co and Delaire Graff Estate, Art Month at Welgemeend has become a highlight of Cape Town’s winter art calendar. This year’s Art Month takes shape around two exhibitions: Satire and Irony will feature a selection of paintings by Robert Hodgins, Stanley Pinker and Alexander Podlashuc in conversation. The works due to go on show are drawn from various private collections, including the Jonathan and Marion Bloch Collection. Art Month at Welgemeend will also host the Cape Town showing of Peter Haden: Almost Forgotten . This year’s Art Month at Welgemeend includes a number of Strauss & Co masterclasses that will provide insight into the artists presented on the two exhibitions. Speakers include collector Lizelle Kilbourn, Professor Michael Godby, curator Hayden Proud and Strauss & Co’s art specialists Dr Gera de Villiers, Matthew Partridge and Dr Alastair Meredith. 38
