Strauss & co - 2017 Review

Jewellery performed very well. From a single owner, who had inherited his mother’s collection of 1970s Danish silver jewellery, a striking Georg Jensen silver Mobius pendant/ brooch designed by Vivianna Torun, fetched R12 505, more than triple its high estimate. Complementing artworks from the 50s and 60s and following international furniture collecting trends, a small group of Scandinavian furniture was offered. A pair of Danish beechwood Swan chairs, by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen, circa 1958, sold for R79 576; a pair of Swedish birch wood Triva chairs, Bengt Ruda for Nordiska Kompaniet, circa 1953, achieved R34 104; and a Danish teak sideboard, Ib Kofod Larsen for Faarup Mobler, 1960s sold for R56 840. The good sell through rate of 83% reflected strong interest from South African collectors in superb design and craftsmanship.
