Strauss & co - 2017 Review

Following on the results achieved for oriental artefacts in March, an attractive pair of 18th century Chinese famille-rose saucer dishes was offered in the October auction. With the excellent provenance of having belonged to the Purcell Collection, this lot fetched R96 628. Dr William Purcell (1866-1919), regarded as being one of the founders of modern araneology in South Africa as well as pioneering the discovery of various frog species, amassed a substantial collection of Cape Dutch furniture and Chinese porcelain, which was housed during his lifetime in the family-owned historic Bergvliet Farm. A fine Japanese Namikawa Yasuyuki cloisonné jar and cover far exceeded its estimate selling for R170 520. An 18th century Cape rococo stinkwood armoire sold for R568 400 confirming the market’s interest in good Cape furniture.
