Strauss & co - 2017 Review

Quality lots by Gerard Sekoto, a pioneering modern who left South Africa in 1947, are scarce at auction. Two of the seven lots sold in 2017 performed exceptionally well. Women in the Country (c.1945-47), a gregarious study of street life from Sekoto’s celebrated Eastwood period, Gerard Sekoto The Pink Road Sold R1 477 840, 13 November 2017 prompted competitive bidding and sold above the high estimate for R3 751 440. An earlier work from the painter’s formative Sophiatown period, The Pink Road (c.1939-42), netted R1 477 840. Sekoto ranked seventh in Strauss & Co’s most valuable artist list, achieving combined sales of R6.1 million. © Gerard Sekoto Foundation | DALRO 29
