2 Cape Farmlands I 1930 casein 55,9 x 50,8 cm Pierneef’s caseins are often considered to be his jewels because of their rarity and the brilliance of their jewel-like colours. Casein, similar to poster paint or gouache, is a strong adhesive substance made from fresh curd, the protein therein acting as a binding agent. Pierneef was waiting for supplies, ordered from the art dealers Schweickerts in Pretoria, to arrive from Europe when he formulated this medium; its quick drying properties particularly well suited to his experimentation with realism, impressionism and pointillism.
