Strauss & co - 2017 Mid-year Review

Three elegant stoneware pieces by Austrian-born British studio potter Lucie Rie all surpassed the high estimates. A stoneware bottle with flared lip, circa 1970s, sold for R170 520 (high estimate R150 000), a stoneware sgraffito pedestal bowl, circa 1980s, fetched R215 992 (high estimate R100 000), and a porcelain bowl with golden manganese glazed rim achieved R341 040 (high estimate R100 000). There was competitive bidding amongst international buyers on the collection of jade and glass Chinese snuff bottles. The March sale of decorative arts significantly contributed to the company’s bottom line, bringing in combined sales of R11.55 million.
