Photography is an important medium of the post-apartheid period and has performed exceptionally well in 2017. Greg Marinovich’s Dead Zone , a limited-edition portfolio of 41 photographs describing social upheaval in the 1990s, sold for R284 200. Shortly after the sale, Marinovich won the Alan Paton Award at the Sunday Times literary awards for his non- fiction book, Murder at Small Koppie: The Real Story of the Marikana Massacre. In March, Pieter Hugo’s still life, In Tyrone Brand’s Bedroom , attracted enthusiastic bidding, fetching R125 048, double its pre- sale high estimate. An important early photograph by Mikhael Subotzky, Preacher, Dwarsrivier Prison (0053) , a panoramic study of a Sunday church service in an outlying Cape prison, sold for R90 944.
