Erik Laubscher Overberg in Winter Sold R1 079 960 Peter Clarke The Fence Sold R909 440 Peter Clarke, Erik Laubscher and Cecil Skotnes, three key later-generation moderns, also performed well. Clarke’s gouache, The Fence (1960), a rousing allegory of social division, achieved R909 440 (high estimate R800 000). Laubscher’s late-career symphony in green, Overberg in Winter (1996), netted R1 079 960 (high estimate R600 000). Encounter , a large carved and painted panel by Skotnes fetched R1 250 480 (high estimate R700 000). While painting continues to dominate Strauss & Co’s offering, sculpture always features strongly among the sale lots. An edition of Anton van Vouw’s accomplished figure study, TheHammerWorker , collected R852 600.While Strauss & Co’s fine art catalogue is principally composed of work by South African artists, a striking bronze by British sculptor, Lynn Chadwick, Walking Couple III (1961), fetched R1 705 200 (high estimate R600 000). 12
