Strauss & co - 2016 Review

Strauss & Co is committed to social investment in art and culture. Throughout 2016, the company engaged in various outreach projects with school learners and young business professionals, as well as hosted numerous charitable auctions. These projects ranged from informal mentorships and public lectures to art awards and social events at art fairs and galleries. The aim of these ventures is to develop and grow the audience for art and culture in South Africa. Johannesburg had an especially busy programme of developmental events throughout 2016. The company hosted a number of charitable auctions, including a sale in association with the World Wildlife Fund, a leading organization in wildlife conservation and endangered species. It also hosted charitable auctions in association with Gallery Momo, a well-known retail gallery founded by Monna Mokoena, the Bag Factory Artists’ Studios, a hub for emerging art, and the University of Johannesburg. The Johannesburg office of Strauss & Co once again hosted the annual Cassirer Welz Award, which is named for two prominent auctioneers, Reinhold Cassirer and Stephan Welz, Strauss & Co’s founding director. Artist Nomphumelelo Ngoma won the award, which includes a residency at the Bag Factory Artists’ Studios and the opportunity to exhibit at the Everard Read Gallery. Strauss & Co also participated in the Turbine Art Fair, a fair devoted to emerging artists.
