Strauss & co - 2016 Review

Interest in exceptional works by members of dealer Egon Guenther’s Amadlozi Group remains high following the 2014 sale of 34 important works from the Harry Lits Collection by Strauss & Co Sydney Kumalo, a founding Amadlozi member, performed especially well in 2016. Best known for his human-animal subjects and his “powerful expressionist” style, as Battiss put it, Kumalo’s Study for Mythological Rider , a bronze portraying an oversized human figure astride a diminutive animal, sold for R1 364 160 in Cape Town. Demand for fellow Amadlozi member, Edoardo Villa, was inconsistent. Only outstanding Villa pieces commanded noteworthy prices. For example, Villa’s painted-steel maquette of his well- known 1975 work, The Meeting , realised R568 400 in May. Sydney Kumalo Study for Mythological Rider Sold R1 364 160, 10 October 2016 36
