Gerard Sekoto Convicts Cutting the Hedge Sold R625 240, 14 March 2016 Peter Clarke is another post-war painter from Cape Town whose star continues to rise. Cock Stand , a 1975 gouache previously owned by photographer and jazz promoter Rashid Lombard, achieved R682 080 in October in Cape Town. Clarke’s 1968 oil Still Life with Oranges, Bottle and Jug achieved a solid R284 200 at the May sale in Johannesburg. Convicts Cutting the Hedge , a 1942 oil on cardboard made when Sekoto was livin g in District Six, opposite the Roeland Street prison, sold for R625 240.
