Stanley Pinker Tietiesbaai Sold R1 250 480, 10 October 2016 During his Strauss & Co lecture Karel Nel observed how Preller and Battiss shifted the centre of focus from Cape Town to Johannesburg. Cape Town nonetheless remained a centre for painting. Stanley Pinker and Erik Laubscher, close friends who often went on painting trips together, were among the city’s most important painters. Their reputations at auction justifiably remain solid. A late entrant into the bidding in October helped push Pinker’s early 1970s study of Tietiesbaai on theWest Coast into the six figure territory, the work eventually fetching R1 250 480.
