Strauss & co - 2016 Review

Robert Hodgins, who knew Battiss and assisted with his printmaking, continued to draw enthusiastic bidders in 2016. His 1997 oil, Bad Man with Great Threads , sold for R2 387 280, just shy of the world-record price of R2 500 960 set for Hodgins in March 2015 by Strauss & Co. Other notable Hodgins works sold in 2016 included a 1998 oil titled Three characters in search of a painter (R1 023 120), a virtuoso experiment in colour and form, and Ek sal jou so ‘n klap gee! (R1 136 800), a 2001 oil produced for his retrospective at the Aardklop National Art Festival. Strauss & Co chairman Frank Kilbourn is bullish and predicts that Hodgins will continue to set new record highs.
