Strauss & co - 2015 Mid-year Review
A similar observation might be made around a record breaking result for Stanley Pinker, a painting entitled Love , sold in March 2014. Here against a pop art “love” icon, a female nude – an arrangement of marionette body parts – is presented to the viewer like the trophies of some over- fond depersonalisation, affirming and debasing a blooming sexuality in the same curious gestures. The image is powerfully imbued with the ambivalences of the Sixties, yet eloquent with the perceptions of the outsider. In short the image renders the subject in ways that lift it beyond its time and into the zones of the internalised psychological drama. What is, above all, to be discerned here is a new maturity in the artist’s conception of the nuances of his subject, and, Stanley Pinker Love Sold R3 410 400, 17 March 2014 SOUTH AFRICAN RECORD FOR THE ARTIST ©The Estate of Stanley Pinker | DALRO 12
