Strauss & co - 2015 Mid-year Review
This reinterpretation is very much to the point here. Consider in this regard, Vladimir Tretchikoff’s Zulu Maiden , sold for R3 183 040 (against an estimate of R1.9 to R2.1 million in Cape Town in March). While critics might dismiss the work as kitsch of the order of Cecil B De Mille, if you consider it from Trechikoff’s own perspective – casting the smouldering, untamed, Amazonian qualities conjured in the portraiture against the backdrop of the out-of-Africa zebra skin ground – the work grows eloquent of the artist’s passionate exoticism – and, arguably at least, worthy of the price that was paid.
