Karoo signed and dated 30 oil on board 52 by 63cm Sold R1 225 400, September 2011 PROVENANCE HRH Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone In 1930 the Women’s Committee of Pretoria wished to present Princess Alice, leading patron of the arts in South Africa, with a gift of two works by Pierneef, an artist for whom she had a great affinity and admiration. She chose two paintings, one of which is illustrated above. This painting hung in Kensington Palace for many years and is highly regarded by connoisseurs who share Princess Alice’s acknowledged keen eye for art. It displays Pierneef’s remarkable mastery of the South African landscape and his appreciation of the very best of Impressionism. 21
