Born in Eshowe, Bongi Bengu left South Africa in 1978 when her family went into political exile. Her schooling was in Switzerland and Swaziland. She obtained a BA(FA), cum laude from Mount Vernon College in Washington D.C. in 1993, and subsequently retuned to South Africa, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Michaelis School of Fine Art in 1997. She has exhibited widely and has been the recipient of a number of residencies abroad. 87 Vanessa Cowling . Vanessa Cowling graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art with a BA(FA) in 1998. She specialised further at the International Centre of Photography in New York and thereafter spent a number of years in London and Edinburgh. Her first solo exhibition was held in 2005 and she has exhibited in numerous group shows. In 2006 Struik Publishers published her first book of travel photography, West Coast: Cederberg to Sea . Currently, Vanessa lectures at Michaelis and the CapeTown School of Photography and freelances specialising in travel and portrait photography.
