Gavin Younge joined the staff of Michaelis as a lecturer in Sculpture in1975, gaining his MFA in 1988 at UCT and serv- ing as Director of the Art School from 1993 to 1999 when he was appointed to a Professorship. Known for his site spe- cific sculptures (Standard Bank Investment Company, Johan- nesburg Art Gallery, Cape Town Waterfront, Rhodes Uni- versity and the CTICC), he represented South Africa on the Champs de la Sculpture , Paris (2000). He has published with Thames and Hudson and writes on contemporary art. He has exhibited in France annually since 2007. The work on auction dates from his GIPCA-funded exhibition at CIRCA, Johannesburg (2010). This exhibition offered an interpreta- tion of landscape and Dr Lucinda Backwell’s paleontological discoveries with hyena coprolites (fossilised hyena dung). 80 Pippa Skotnes . Pippa Skotnes attended school at Parktown Convent in Johannesburg.This experience provided a well-spring of ideas, some of which materialised in her continuing artwork, Lamb of God and the Book of Iterations (2001–2011), which was exhibited widely in Europe and the United States. Skotnes holds MFA and Doctor of Literature degrees, both from UCT. She has produced and published a number of books, including the artist’s books about Lucy Lloyd and the |xam, Sound From theThinking Strings , Claim to the Country (Jacana 2007) and Unconquerable Spirit (Jacana 2008). She is currently Professor of Fine Art and the Director of the Centre for Curating the Archive at UCT where she is working on a project about land, language, and holes in the ground, whilst continuing to exhibit her artwork widely.
