Strauss & co - Michaelis

Preface As one of the premier art institutions on the continent, offering a dynamic programme of study, Michaelis produces graduates whose work contributes to the growth and development of South African art. Michaelis is populated by students who are passionate about making art, but in order to continue to attract a talented student body from varied and diverse backgrounds, it is essential for the School to raise funds to assist them during their studies, whether it is with fees, materials or living costs. With this aim in mind, the Michaelis Alumni Exhibition and Auction not only acknowledges the extremely high standard of work of our graduates by showcasing their creative contribution to the local and international art world, but also benefits future generations of students at the school. Our graduates have made generous donations of their work for auction, the proceeds of which will be put towards special projects at Michaelis, in particular to bursaries and scholarships for talented students. Not only is this a wonderful opportunity to acquire works by emerging and established artists, but also to help raise funds for a worthy cause in the process. In a world battered by recession and financial collapse it is more of a struggle for artists to find willing buyers, but it can also be a great opportunity for good deals and bargains. Any high profile event of this magnitude requires meticulous organization and planning. On behalf of the School, I want to extend thanks and appreciation to Nadja Daehnke, who curated and organized the event, ably assisted by Linda Stupart and Danielle de Kock. We are also extremely fortunate to have the participation of auction house Strauss & Co., with the privilege of the incomparable Stefan Welz putting the work under the hammer. Michaelis graduates are driven by commitment and passion for art, and it is rewarding to see the range of work and imagination on display. It is particularly heartening that so many of our graduates willingly agreed to participate in the exhibition and donate their work for auction, without which this event could not have taken place. It is with much appreciation and pride that I thank them for giving so generously to their alma mater. Stephen Inggs Director
