Brendhan Dickerson completed his Masters degree with distinction at Michaelis in 1996. He is a passionate arts educator and has lectured in art practice and sculpture since 1995 - at WITS, UCT and Stellenbosch University. He was product developer and project co-ordinator at Montebello Design Centre’s Working from Waste skills development programme. In 2003 he ran a ceramic project fostering creativity and self-expression at a centre for mentally handicapped adults. His work is represented, inter alia, in the collections of the Iziko South African National Gallery, Johannesburg Art Gallery, Durban Art Gallery and various corporate collections. In 2009 he was co-winner of the IDASA sculpture competition, and has received numerous commissions for his fire sculpture performances. 50 Johann van der Schijff . Johann van der Schijff is senior lecturer at Michaelis, teaching New Media. Previously he was involved with setting up the multimedia programme at the University of Johannesburg. He holds a MFA (New Media) degree by the Frank Mohr Instituut, Groningen, The Netherlands (1997), MFA (Sculpture) by UCT (1994) and a BA(FA), University of Pretoria (1990). His sculptural/new media works have been exhibited nationally and internationally. Johann’s research interests are in the areas of computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques and the design of interactive systems. Questions of power relations in society underlie much of his work, forcing the viewer into a position of choice in their engagement with his artworks.
