Joh-burg 1907” bronze, good dark brown patination height: 42 cm SOLD R946 900, MARCH 2009 Anton Van Wouw S OUTH A FRICAN 1862-1945 World Record Hands modestly folded and head lightly bowed as if in quiet contemplation, Anton van Wouw’s Die Noitjie van Die Onderveld , is mentioned in an article in De Volkstem of 7 July, 1908 as well as in the Hollandsch Zuid-Afrika of 15 September 1910, where the young girl is described as a ‘dopper’or one belonging to the Reformed Church. 1 One of the artist’s most popular sculptures, significantly this cast was presented to President Marthinus Theunis Steyn and his wife Isabella Steyn-Fraser on the occasion of their silver wedding anniversary, 10 March 1912, by the Zuid Afrikaansche Vrouwen Federatie. 1 A.
