Strauss & co - Review 2009
37 Furniture A highly important Cape coromandel and silver-mounted buffet, 18th Century SOLD R1 058 300, OCTOBER 2009 Record for Cape Furniture By repute, this rare piece was one of a pair owned by Baron Joachim van Plettenberg, who was Governor of the Cape from 1771-1785. It was presented by him as a wedding gift to Johan Sebastian Leibbrandt 1747-1817. Although this piece remained in the same family for six generations, it is unrecorded in any literature. The striking combination of the timber and the fine Cape silver fittings testify to the quality of craftsmanship of the period but sadly craftsman remains unknown.
