Against a backdrop of broken planes and abstracted swathes of colour, the large fleshy petals acquire a sensuality through thick impasto laid down in swift brushstrokes. Having achieved a world record price at Strauss & Co.’s inaugural sale, the proceeds from the sale of this painting were donated, according to the consignee’s wishes, to charities benefitting children.
