Strauss & co - 9 December 2021, Cape Town

Foreword We’re delighted to be collaborating with Strauss & Co for our 2021 Norval Foundation Benefit Auction. While the last year and a half has been challenging, this auction will assist us to continue connecting the public with the practices of leading artists from South Africa and across the continent. We’re deeply grateful to the artists and businesses who have so generously donated to this auction as well as to Stonehage Fleming, our major sponsor alongside Strauss & Co, for their support. Having recently taken over as Director and with the restrictions associated with the Covid-19 pandemic now easing, Norval Foundation is emerging from this period refocused. Our artistic programme, at the heart of what we do, has recently returned to pre- pandemic. We’ve already opened two new exhibitions over the past two months, The Zanzibari Years: Irma Stern and Congress: The Social Body in Three Figurative Painters , and early next year we open When Rain Clouds Gather: Black South African Women Artists 1940-2000 and the installation Shady by Kapwani Kiwanga. We’ve crafted significant partnerships with other organisations, including Boschendal Wine Estate in the Winelands and Philippi Village in Cape Town, to share the work that we do with audiences across the region. Both collaborations will find us extending our programming far beyond Tokai and I encourage you to follow us on our social media channels for more information about these collaborations and our artistic programming. Alongside these exciting developments, we have a new communications strategy, which finds us focusing on how we share the stories we’re so passionate about. Our series An Evening with…, which launched in November with An Evening with Irma Stern and was hosted by Norval Foundation board member Carol Bower, will expand in the new year. This series will be accompanied by a new podcast, which also launches shortly. We’re also delighted that the second edition of our Making Art History series of educational publications, undertaken in partnership with Sanlam, is currently being distributed to thousands of learners across South Africa free of charge. As part of our ongoing focus on art education, what was our Shop is being transformed into our new Children’s Gallery to better facilitate the work that we do with our youngest audiences. We’ve also built a play area next to The Skotnes restaurant to create a welcoming space for families. None of these exciting developments would be possible without a dynamic, dedicated team and engaged donors such as yourself. We urge you to support us by bidding on the lots included in this auction. Each and every bid is an investment into South Africa’s cultural sector and each contribution will go towards supporting our work. Once again, thank you to everyone who has contributed to this auction, including Anthonij Rupert Wyne, Art Gazette (Grace Cross, Lebogang Mogul Mabusela, Unathi Mkonto and Swain Hoogervorst), blank projects, Delaire Graff, Ellerman House, Everard Read, Kate Gottgens, Georgina Gratrix, Goodman Gallery, Graham Beck Estate, William Kentridge, La Cotte Farm, Le Lude, Louis Norval, Maja Marx, Zanele Muholi, Brett Murray, Louis Norval, Athi-Patra Ruga, Sadie Family, Gerda Scheepers, SMAC, Steenberg Vineyards, Stonehage Fleming, and WHATIFTHEWORLD.
