He is most widely known in his home country for his large series of paintings that depict the life of the bushranger/outlaw Ned Kelly, which have become defining symbols of Australian nationalism. Elsewhere he is better known for his diverse and prolific art practice, which includes expansive outback landscapes, such as the present lot, set designs for theatre and ballet, book cover illustrations, photography and site-specific installations such as the monumental murals Paradise Garden (1968–70) and Rainbow Serpent (1970–72).
