Thence by descent to the current owner. LITERATURE Hans Fransen (2009) Erik Laubscher: A Life in Art , Stellenbosch: SMAC, illustrated in colour on page 210. Erik Laubscher and Claude Bouscharain met as young art students at the Académie Montmartre, Paris, in 1951, both studying under the famous artist Fernand Léger. They married and started a family straight away, returning to Cape Town in 1953. The couple’s prolonged trip to the USA in 1966 influenced their work in a significant way, especially Claude’s, which responded immediately to the hard edged style in America at the time.
