Highlights - Live Virtual Auction, 26 - 28 July 2020

March to June 2020 Strauss & Co’s 90 + days of COVID-19 in lockdown The health lockdown prompted by the outbreak of coronavirus COVID-19 has been extremely challenging. Strauss & Co is very grateful to our clients for their ongoing support throughout this difficult time and for being part of our transformative journey as a company. The strict terms of the Disaster Management Act required an action-orientated plan by Strauss & Co’s executive team, both to secure the livelihoods of our staff as well as ensure continuity and liquidity for our clients. We are pleased to share these milestones from our lockdown experience. On 10-11 May, Strauss & Co hosted its first- ever hybrid auction. Held in full compliance with national health regulations, our team of auctioneers led the live-streamed sale from studios set up in Cape Town and Johannesburg, “passing the gavel” in relay fashion. Despite being a new sale’s proposition, our clients made an effortless transition to the virtual platform. We achieved 100% sell-through for the Bordeaux-themed wine sale, known in auction parlance as a white glove sale, and also maintained the benchmark prices for various blue-chip artists, notably Irma Stern, J.H. Pierneef and Alexis Preller. A single-owner collection of VOC items emerged as one of the highlights of the decorative arts session. Strauss & Co has hosted two online-only auctions during lockdown, in April and June. The total achieved for the April sale was a new company record for an online-only auction. Diederick Düring was the unexpected star of our first lockdown sale. The strong demand for lots across all sales and all categories in our online-only sales was maintained in June, with two works by J.H. Pierneef achieving the highest individual results. In overview, these results are very gratifying. As agents for sellers, it is our duty as South Africa’s leading auction house to be steadfast and inventive so that we can offer our clients an effortless transactional service to secure their livelihoods. The current health and economic emergency requires an efficient and seamless transaction mechanism for the disposal of assets, which Strauss & Co has proven it can offer. Client interaction and education is an important aspect of Strauss & Co’s business culture. During the lockdown we hosted insightful weekday Zoom talks with Strauss & Co specialists and guest speakers. These talks will continue until further notice. The popularity of this programme prompted us to expand it. Strauss & Co’s newly introduced Museum Moments series of Zoom talks invites participants to go museum hopping. The series offers behind-the-scenes insights into South Africa’s cultural gems and is an important expression of solidarity at a difficult time for museums. Corporate citizenship matters to Strauss & Co. We have undertaken to donate a portion of the net profits from each sale in order to assist South Africans in distress and have already donated R300 000 to a variety of good causes related to the arts. We are delighted to showcase some of the highlights of our upcoming live virtual sale due to take place on 26-28 July, in this brochure, featuring important works from acclaimed private collections.
