73 Kanonkop Paul Sauer Jeroboam 1987 5000ml 1 (1 x 1) R15 000 – 20 000 PROVENANCE Wine Cellar ITEM NOTES Kanonkop is often described as the South African equivalent of a Grand Cru or First Growth. Owned by the fourth generation Krige family, Abri Beeslaar is their long-term winemaker who has won International Winemaker of the year an incredible 3 times. The Bordeaux blend was named after former owner, Paul Sauer, and was first made in 1981. Perfectly stored large formats of vintage Kanonkop are very scarce and it may be one of a kind. ‘The flagship red from this prestige vineyard. Complex, trenchant, wide-flavoured, tannic; in the Cape context these are powerhouse not effete wines. Do not look for elegance, at least too early, though Paul Sauers achieve accessible harmony a year or two ahead of the straight cabernets below. 1987 has all Kanonkop hallmarks.’ Platter’s SA Wine Guide 1990, 4 stars
