66 Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon 1984 750ml 6 (1 x 6) R10 000 – 12 000 PROVENANCE Private Client ITEM NOTES Meerlust Estate has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756. In 1980, after several years of experimentation and visits to Bordeaux, Nico Myburgh and Giorgio Dalla Cia produced the icon Rubicon. Having previously worked at Chateau Lafite, the classic 1984 was one of Nico’s final vintages before son Hannes took over the family estate. It shows remarkable energy and vinosity at 35 years and remains one of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons of the era. ‘All vintages frommaiden 1975 through to 1984 (no bottling in 1977, 1979 and 1985) have been awarded Superior ratings. In lighter-to- medium bodied style, with delicacy and complexity of first-rate cabernet; but not in the dense, blackcurrants and billowing vanilla vogue of some NewWorld cabernets. Patterns are now plainer …The 1984 is also exceptional, with multitude of rich flavours and ample, firm tannins for keeping…On present tasting, order of preference would be: ’80, ’84, ’81, ’82, ’75, ’83, ’78, ’76. (The ’80, ’82 were champion Cape reds of their year).’ Platter’s SA Wine Guide 1989, 4 stars
