In 1980, after several years of experimentation and visits to Bordeaux, the new blend was born and it was unlike anything South Africa had seen before. The introduction was a Rubicon moment for South African fine wine market. One of SA’s most recognised blends, this was a stellar vintage for Rubicon, and it was awarded the Gold Medal at the Basel Wine Fair in September 2006. It is fully mature but will keep for another decade. ‘After 26 yrs, this ground-breaking bdx-style red still commands cachet & respect: voted ‘SA’s Most Prestigious Wine Internationally’ & ‘An SA Icon’ by Wine readers in 2005. Invariably cab dominated – 70% in current 2001, with 20%merlot, 10% cab f; shows strength of classic cab year: deep, dark fruits nose/flavour; powerful, rich (though retains hallmark moderate alc); still constrained by vibrant grainy tannins; mocha tones from new Fr oak add class.’ Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2006, 4.5 stars
