He was a member of the Grahamstown Group from 1969 to 1978. The artist’s distinctive richly descriptive paintings demonstrate his virtuosity as a draughtsman and painter. This powerfully charged work, dating from 1989, forms part of a body of work that includes indigenous animals and Hodnett’s beloved Eastern Cape vegetation. Through his close observation of nature, enigmatic subject matter and rich palette and paint application, Hodnett creates a poetic painterly idiom of the landscape in which he immersed himself so successfully. The artist now resides in Canada.
