5 “In my opinion, there has never been a better time to collect African art in general, and South African art, in particular. This demand for African art is the result of a combination of positive forces which, collectively, form a very healthy and vibrant art ecosystem. African artists are creating exceptional works which dynamic galleries have succeeded in presenting to the world, securing access and exposure at leading art fairs across the globe. Leading auction houses are cementing the secondary market through dedicated sales and academics and museums are lending gravitas through research and carefully curated exhibitions. African artists featured prominently at influential international art events such as the Venice Biennale, Documenta and Performa, generating awareness and desirability among collectors globally. This ecosystem was given significant impetus and substance with the opening of Zeitz MOCAA in September 2017. Since opening, the museum has made a dynamic impact on the local and international art scene, harnessing several international awards for architecture and its contribution to contemporary culture. Zeitz MOCAA, together with the Iziko National Museum, the Irma Stern Museum, A4 Foundation and the Norval Foundation, in conjunction with our excellent gallerists, have created the foundation for Cape Town becoming a much sought after international art destination. Strauss & Co is delighted to join forces with Zeitz MOCAA and leading African and international artists and galleries in presenting an auction of outstanding artworks, to be sold for the benefit of the museum’s Art Education programme, an initiative we closely identify with.We salute the generosity of the artists who contributed the works and, having waived all commissions in order to maximise the contribution to the program, invite patrons of Zeitz MOCAA and our clients to lend their support to this worthy cause.” Frank Kilbourn Strauss & Co’s Executive Chairperson
