While links could be drawn between traditional African mask-making practices and Kabiru’s sculptural eyewear, his practice is also deeply embedded in the future, creating work from natural materials and the byproducts of global capitalism that culminate in a highly aestheti- cised vision of our contemporary moment. Cyrus Kabiru (b. 1984, Kenya) was selected as a featured artist for The Armory Show’s ‘Focus Section: African Perspectives’, New York (USA: 2016); and has exhibited work at the MARTA Herford Museum of Contemporary Art, Herford (Germany: 2016); the Vitra Design Museum, Weil (Germany: 2015); the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (Spain: 2015); the Théâtre National de Chaillot, Paris, (France: 2015); and the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (USA: 2015 and 2013).
