18 Zeitz MOCAA Benefit Art Auction Jeanne Gaigher trained as a printmaker and photographer. Although these influences are still present in her work, the turn to painting has opened the door for more abstracted and interpretative readings of the world. Beetroot (2017) is one such work. Here we see a combination of swishing reds, browns, and blues lift from the bowl in the centre of the image. The result is a sensory invitation, one that relies on your memory to recall not just ‘beetroot’ in and of itself, but the experience of it – the way it looks, smells, tastes. Jeanne Gaigher (b. 1990, South Africa) has held numerous solo exhibitions at SMITH Gallery, Cape Town (South Africa), and has exhibited work in Perth,Vienna, and Paris. In 2017 she was awarded the Index Artist in Residence Scholarship, Freira-Stipendium, Zurich (Switzerland: 2017); as well as Artist in Residence at Blackriver Studios, Cape Town (South Africa: 2017) and at Alma Mater, Cape Town (South Africa: 2017). 7 Jeanne Gaigher SOUTH AFRICAN 1990- Beetroot 2017 pigmented digital print, ink and acrylic paint on canvas 102 by 109cm ZAR30 000 - 40 000 £1 700 - 2 200 $2 100 - 2 800 € 1 900 - 2 500 PROVENANCE Donated by the artist.
