After five successful online auctions the response by buyers, old and young, local and international, has been phenomenal, reaffirming this worldwide shift in shopping preferences. On the night of Monday 20 April, Strauss & Co’s auction of South African and International Art concluded promptly at 8pm following two weeks of hotly contested bidding. Prospective buyers continued to submit their bids until the very end, eager to be a part of this affordable and accessible platform. The total realised was R3,8 million bringing the total turnover for online- only auctions at Strauss & Co to R13,3 million. 2005 bids were submitted and many new buyers registered. The top ten lots of the sale were all by South African artists, headed by Ephraim Ngatane’s Gumboot Dancers which sold for R190 873, followed by The Sheep in the Meadows by Penny Siopis which sold for R80 799, double its presale estimate, and Edoardo Villa’s Afro which sold for R77 286. A work by South African artist and founder of several art training projects, Bill Ainslie, titled Two Boys , sold for R58 550, ten times its presale estimate. Each sale has set a new bar, this being the highest so far. Ruarc Peffers, Senior Art Specialist at Strauss & Co, commented after the sale: “We are thrilled with the escalating totals achieved by our online auctions and the positive response from the public. Yesterday’s results have set the bar even higher and we embrace the challenge of improving it. This platform places us in a position to offer attractive, lower value works of art to a broader market and a new generation of collectors ultimately benefitting both buyers and sellers. For sellers, it will not only attract greater numbers of prospective buyers, but they will also be exposed to a much further-reaching market and, for buyers, it offers affordable art and collectables that come with the Strauss & Co trusted endorsement.
